Who was George “G.G.” Johnson?
A true pioneer, George Johnson was the first and only African-American head golf professional in Kentucky. He began as a caddie in the segregated South and rose to earn his PGA Tour card in 1968, competing alongside legends like Jack Nicklaus.
In 1971, he made history by winning the Azalea Open, becoming just the fourth African-American to win a PGA tournament. After years on the PGA and Senior Tours, he brought his passion to Louisville as head pro at Bobby Nichols Golf Course.
More than a professional, George was a mentor, leader, and inspiration. Though he passed in 2014, his legacy continues through the lives he impacted.
